Asociación Mangle in California

The Jiquilisco Bay Alliance (JBA) was thrilled to host José María “Chema” Argueta, the executive director of Asociación Mangle, for a series of talks and fundraising events in California. Thank you to everyone who came out to support us during the week, your presence, participation and enthusiasm was seen and felt and we are so grateful to everyone who contributed to make this week possible.

We had a fundraising goal of $10,000 and we are still just about $1500 short. Help us reach our goal!

Talk at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies

On Monday, Oct 7, JBA Program Director Nick Rahaim and Argueta gave a presentation at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, discussing the work of Asociación Mangle in the Bajo Lempa region in El Salvador and the partnership with the Jiquilisco Bay Alliance. Argueta spoke about the mangrove ecosystem restoration projects Asociación Mangle oversees, while Rahaim outlined the first Fisheries Improvement Project to be launched in El Salvador, and the collaboration between Jiquilisco Bay Alliance, Asociación Mangle and Asociación Cincahuite to bring it forward.

“La Lucha Continúa: Solidarity with Rural Social Movements in El Salvador” Event at Hasta Muerte Coffee in Oakland

Later in the week, we hosted a talk at Hasta Muerte Coffee in Oakland where Argueta, Rahaim, Jiquilisco Bay Alliance Executive Director Jamie Stanton discussed the history of solidarity with rural social movements in rural El Salvador and how it has impacted community organizing and international coordination. We were happy to see decades-long supporters of Asociación Mangle join us, as well as plenty of new faces. Highlights of this discussion will be posted on our social media accounts, including one of Stanton describing how friendship is at the root of our work.
